In 1963 MADRID integrated the BIRKENSTOCK footbed into a sandal for the first time. MADRID allowed maximum freedom of movement and optimum ventilation for the foot. It accentuated the function of the toes and allowed ultimate flexibility, which in turn promoted increased muscle activity and blood circulation within the foot.
